KYCAA Seminar -- Appreciating Chinese Traditional Poems, Lyrics, and Parallel Proses (Feb. 22, 2014)

This seminar, prepared by Dr. Zhanping Liu of Kentucky State University, presents some fundamental points for appreciating Chinese traditional poems, lyrics, and parallel proses from the format perspective, specifically in terms of rhyme, couplet (parallelism and antithesis), and tonal harmony (level and oblique tones) . This talk primarily addresses rhyme and couplet, the two elements required by both the pre-Tang poetry and the classical poetry (established in the Tang dynasty), followed by a brief introduction to tonal harmony that is highly imposed on the classical poetry. Many well-known poems, lyrics, and parallel proses in the history are referenced to demonstrate the aforementioned elements of significance to these creative arts in the Chinese traditional literature, in combination with some discussions on Dr. Liu’s favorite yet still preliminary practice.

Please see the slides for more information. Please visit Dr. Liu's Blog if you would like to exchange ideas regarding to this topic. Comments are welcomed.
